Went to a friend's house in Austin and their 'floating' shelves are held up with command strips

I mean, they have three heavy looking cookbooks on each one and they're just stuck to the wall with those little adhesive strips. I asked about it and my friend said they've been up for 'about 8 months' with no issues. Idk, maybe it's just me but I would be so nervous every time I walked past. Has anyone else seen a DIY solution that worked way better than you thought it would?

Those strips can hold for a while, but the real risk is the paint or drywall failing before the adhesive does. I've seen them pull a big chunk of wall off when they finally let go. It's worth the ten minutes to put in a proper anchor.

Is it really that big of a deal? Those strips are rated to hold a decent amount, and eight months is a long test run. I'd probably just leave it alone lol.

But what happens when that rating fails after a year, not eight months?
