DAE remember when we drew everything by hand, and now it is all done on screen
I started drafting back in 2008 at a small shop in Grand Rapids and everything was done with a T-square and a drafting board. I would spend hours with a .5mm mechanical pencil getting a wall section just right, and if I messed up I had to erase and redraw the whole thing. Now I am in AutoCAD and Revit every day and honestly I can crank out a full floor plan in like 2 hours that used to take me 3 days. But I still keep a sketch pad next to my keyboard because sometimes it is faster to draw a detail by hand and scan it than to fight with the software. The thing I miss is that old setup forced you to really think through every line before you put it down, where now it is so easy to just copy paste and move stuff around that I catch dumb mistakes more often. I am not saying one way is right or wrong, just that the job feels totally different than when I learned it. Curious if anyone else here made that switch and if you still do any hand drafting at all.
The part about the old setup forcing you to think through every line before you put it down is where I kinda see it the other way. I learned on a board too and yeah you planned ahead because erasing sucked, but half that planning was just fear of wasting time, not real careful thinking. You'd get locked into a bad layout because redrawing the whole sheet felt too painful, so you'd just live with it. Now I can try three versions of a plan in an afternoon and actually pick the best one instead of the first one I could survive drawing.
