Dimension lines that point to the wrong layer, every single time

I keep seeing people drop dimensions on the default layer in AutoCAD and then wonder why their plot looks like a mess. Took me 2 years and a rework at a shop in Tulsa to learn the hard way, so now I check layer states before I even start. Anyone else got a go-to rule for keeping dimension layers clean, or is it just me being picky?
