My kid asked me why I still draw on a tablet after my old mentor's talk.

I was showing my 12-year-old how to use my Cintiq, and she said, 'Dad, you still draw on a screen? My teacher says we should use paper first.' It made me remember my old boss, Frank, who always said, 'The screen lies until your hand knows the truth.' For 20 years I thought he was just being stubborn about hand sketching, but maybe he had a point about building the skill in your head before you hit undo. How many of you still start a complex detail with a pencil? I feel like my kid and Frank are teaming up on me.

So what's the first thing you'd sketch on paper now?

Frank's old quote got me too, @kim_davis. I'd just draw a simple coffee cup, it's a good way to get the pen moving.

Wait, Frank said that 20 years ago? That's wild he was already thinking about it back then!

Remember that interview where he talked about drawing on napkins?
