My old lead told me to stop putting 5 decimal places on shop drawings, I fought him for 2 years
He kept saying the shop couldn't hold tighter than 1/16 inch anyway, and after a $4,200 rework on a stair stringer last month I finally pulled the tolerance block back. Turns out the fabricator was rounding everything to the nearest 32nd the whole time. Anyone else had a lead call out their precision habit like that?
That fabricator rounding to the nearest 32nd is the real story here, because it means your decimal places were never buying you anything in the first place. The shop draws what they can build, so if their machines and tape measures bottom out at a 32nd, drawing a 64th just gives you a false sense of control while you argue over numbers nobody can cut. Your lead was right, but not because precision is bad, it's because you have to match the tolerance block to what the guy actually holding the part can hit.
