Pro tip: layer your hatches before the titleblock

I kept losing a day every project when our engineer would mark up a drawing and I had to strip out all the hatch patterns by hand in AutoCAD. Last week I tried putting every hatch on its own layer with a strict naming system like H-FLOR, H-CEIL, H-WALL, and the cleanup took maybe 20 minutes instead of 6 hours. Does anyone else use a similar layer setup, or do you just let the sunken cost of old habits keep biting you?

Wait, you actually had enough time in your schedule to be losing a FULL DAY on every project and you just lived with it? That's insane to me. I've been doing this for 12 years and the moment I switched to a multi-layer hatch system with color-coded plot styles, my life changed. I still remember the first time I had to strip out a mess of hatches from a civil site plan, took me 9 hours with a hangover, never again. Your engineer probably thinks you're a saint for putting up with that nonsense.

I had a job back in 2018 on a school addition where the original civil drawings were so jacked up with overlapping hatch patterns that I literally spent two full days just cleaning up the layers before I could even start grading the site. The engineer kept sending me "updates" that just dumped more junk on top, so I finally sat down with his office and made them give me a clean legend matching their plot styles to my layer names before I touched anything else. That was the turning point for me, once you get that system locked in it saves you from the 2AM panic of watching a hatch pattern bleed through your sheet borders. The hangover story is brutal though, I've been there with a half-eaten breakfast burrito on my keyboard trying to figure out which hatch was on which frozen layer. My advice is to set up a template file with all your standard hatches and assign each one a unique layer name from day one, never let a new project import that garbage straight from the client. These engineers will never fix it on their end because they don't feel the pain, so you gotta build the wall yourself.
