Swore I would never dimension to the grid line, then a Walnut Creek remodel humbled me in one afternoon
For 8 years I snapped everything to column lines because that is how my first lead trained me, but a 1962 rancher in Walnut Creek with a 3 inch out of square garage wall cost me 4 hours of rework on a Thursday. Now I triple check by pulling diagonals on every wall before I print anything, and my check plot went from 40 markups to 3. Anybody got a faster way to catch a racked wall before the sheet goes out?
Pulling diagonals on every wall sounds solid but the math can lie to you if the wall has a jog or a bump out in it. I had a 1978 split level in Concord where the diagonals matched within an eighth and the wall was still racked, because the top plate was kicked in past the framing at the corner. What caught it was a string line on the face of studs, not the corners. Takes about 90 seconds per wall and it never misses. The diagonal check is good for a quick pass but it should not be the last word on a house that old.
