Thermal imaging guns felt like a gimmick until a 3am attic crawl in Austin

I borrowed one from a buddy to chase a draft that was making a client's utility bill jump $90 a month, and it pointed right at a missing insulation gap behind a knee wall that I'd walked past six times, so now I'm wondering if I should pick one up for every job or just rent it when things get weird, has anyone else had a tool flip their whole approach like that?

...and now I've got one in my truck at all times because apparently I've been diagnosing air leaks with a wet finger and a prayer for the last ten years. The first time I used one properly I found a gap behind a light switch that was basically a direct highway to the outside, which explains why that room always smelled like the neighbor's barbecue. I still think they're overhyped for most jobs, but when the problem isn't obvious, that thing beats crawling around with a candle like some kind of colonial ghost hunter. Now I just have to explain to my wife why I spent $300 on something that looks like a toy gun and she keeps asking if I'm playing laser tag in the attic. Worth every penny, but I'm not about to tell her that part.
