Tried drawing ductwork in 2D and 3D for the same job, and the 3D took half the time
I had a small mechanical room job in Boise last week and decided to sketch it both ways just to see. The 2D plan took me about 6 hours with all the elevations and sections, but the 3D model was done in 3. The fittings and offsets just lined up right the first time, so no back and forth with the shop. Has anyone else found 3D faster for tight spaces like this?
Wait, 6 hours on 2D versus 3 on 3D, that is a huge gap and I almost don't buy it. But then you said the fittings and offsets lined up right the first time with no back and forth with the shop, and that part I totally get. That is usually where the time dies in 2D, all those little conflicts in a tight room that you only catch once you build it in 3D. Boise mechanical rooms are no joke either, some of those closets are tiny. Was the 3D program able to auto size the ducts or did you still have to plug in the numbers by hand?
