Warning: found out my old CAD files were 1/8" off and it took 4 months to show up on site
I'm venting here because I just spent most of Monday redoing a set of shop drawings that should have been fine. Back in January I pulled a detail from an old job folder (a small tenant build-out in Boise) and dropped it straight into a new sheet set without checking the base point. Turns out those old files were drawn 1/8" off from the grid, and nobody caught it because it's small enough to look right on a D-size sheet. It didn't show up till last Thursday when the fab shop called about a gap at the wall and asked why my dims didn't match the field measurements. Four months of nobody noticing, then one phone call and the whole thing unravels. Now I'm going back through every file I reused from that folder and eyeballing base points like a hawk. So my question for you all: do you have a quick habit for checking reused details before they go out the door, or do you just zoom way in and hope for the best?
Zooming in and hoping is exactly how that 1/8 inch slips by, because at full size it looks fine and your eye stops looking. A better habit is to drop a known reference line or grid into the reused file and check it against the new base point before you copy anything over, which takes about ten seconds and catches the shift right away. The other thing worth doing is typing a couple of overall dims and checking them against the field numbers, since the math will tell you the truth even when the drawing looks right.
