Watched a pro use a dry erase marker on glass to trace elevation lines, felt stupid for 7 years of math

Last month at a site walk in Portland the structural guy pulled out a $2 marker and sketched floor levels right on the storefront window, no calculator, no CAD, just eyeballing it against the physical space, so has anyone else found a low-tech trick that beats the software they've been grinding with since trade school?
