Had to pick between a new pump or a full ladder rebuild on the old Marion 7400

The main dredge pump was losing about 15% pressure, but the bucket ladder chain was also showing some serious wear. I went with the pump rebuild first, thinking it was the bigger bottleneck for production. Now the ladder is making a grinding noise I really don't like... should I have flipped the order on those repairs?

That grinding sound is a total gut punch.

Ugh, @anna_miller, that sound is the worst. Try checking if something like a pebble is stuck in the brake rotor shield. It happened to my car last year and the noise was awful until I popped it out.

Man, that sound takes me back. My old truck made a noise like that for a whole week, turned out to be a worn out wheel bearing. I was convinced the whole axle was gonna fall off. The relief when it was just a fifty dollar part was unreal.

Yeah, that "whole axle was gonna fall off" feeling is the worst. I saw @cora813 mention the brake shield thing, and a mechanic buddy told me that's way more common than people think.
