Old timer's advice about oiling buckets saved me a rebuild

Down in Houma, a retired guy watched me hammering out a cutterhead bucket and said "put 10 weight oil on the pins, not grease." I thought he was nuts, grease is grease. Swapped to oil on the next two shifts, pins stopped seizing up in the mud. Been 600 hours since and I haven't had to torch a single pin loose. Anyone else run oil on their bucket pins or is this just a Louisiana thing?

Hell yeah, that old timer knew what he was talking about. My buddy runs a skid steer on the coast and he fought frozen pins for years, torching them out every couple months. He switched to 10 weight oil after reading something similar and said it was like night and day, the mud just slides off instead of packing in there and baking into concrete. Now he keeps a squirt can of it in the toolbox and hits every pin before he hops off the machine.
