Why does nobody talk about how much easier a hydraulic thumb makes winter cleanup?

Why does nobody talk about how much easier a hydraulic thumb makes winter cleanup? I used to run my excavator with a plain bucket for 8 years, so pulling out frozen logs and buried trash meant hopping down with a chain and a come-along every 20 minutes. That stopped after I rented a machine with a hydraulic thumb for a job near Duluth in January, and it took me maybe 3 hours to see the difference. Now I have one on my own rig, and I can grab a whole tangled root ball or bust up ice chunks without leaving the cab. It's not just about speed, it's about not slipping on a bank while you're hooked to a cable. Anyone else upgrade to a thumb late in their career, or do you still swear by the old strap method?
