A taper in Spokane told me my butt joints were too tight, now I gap em out

Last month on a 40 unit apartment remodel, this old taper watched me hang a sheet and said I was leaving no room for the compound to grab. I always butted em tight to avoid ridges, but he showed me how a 1/8 inch gap lets the mud seat better and cuts sanding time by half. I switched to setting a small spacer block on every butt joint and the finish is way smoother. Has anyone else tried gapping that way or do you still run em snug?
