A taper in Tucson said he stopped hanging board because of his shoulders, and now I keep thinking about it
I was grabbing coffee at a supply house on Alvernon a couple weeks back and got to talking with a taper who's been in the trade about 22 years. He said the last time he hung a full ceiling solo he could not lift his right arm over his head for three days, so he switched to finishing only. I'm 41 and I've noticed my shoulder clicks on the first lift every morning, but I figured that was just part of it. He said he wishes somebody had made him learn to use a panel lift back when he was 30 instead of trying to be a hero with two guys and a T-brace. I use a lift when the ceiling is over 9 feet, but on 8 foot lids I still do it by hand half the time to save the setup. Now I'm wondering how many other guys in their 40s made that same switch and never went back to hanging. Is it just me or does everybody hit this wall around the same age?
Three days of not being able to lift your arm over your head? That's wild. I always figured the old guys complaining about their shoulders were just griping, but that's a whole different deal. I'm 38 and mine does the same click thing every morning, and I've been telling myself it's nothing. Hearing a guy with 22 years say he had to quit hanging completely makes me feel dumb for doing 8 foot lids by hand just to skip the setup. Saving ten minutes on a lift isn't worth losing my arm for a week. Might be time to stop being cheap about it.
