Foreman told me to stop sanding so much, still not sure he was right
On a hotel job outside Phoenix last month, this old timer watched me block-sand a seam for ten minutes and said 'you're making it worse, tape it once and move on.' I was raised to leave it glass smooth, but he argued customers never notice anyway and it costs an extra hour per room. Anyone else get told to dial back the finish work, and did you listen or keep your standard?

Did he actually show you what he meant by “tape it once,” or was he just telling you to stop? Because there’s a big difference between rushing a bad seam and knowing when a second pass is pointless. I’ve seen guys who sand forever because they’re scared of the next step, and the foreman might be reading you that way. But if you’re getting it truly flat, and the finish is what you’d want in your own house, then his “customers never notice” line feels like an excuse to bill less time. The real question is whether he’s saving you from a wasted habit or just cheaping out the job. Which one did it feel like on the spot?
