Found out that a 4x12 sheet of 5/8 drywall weighs more than I do, and I learned it the hard way on a stairwell
I was doing a stairwell job in Charlotte last month and grabbed a 4x12 sheet of 5/8 fire rated board by myself like an idiot. The thing comes in around 105 pounds and I found that number on the manufacturer's spec sheet after I nearly ate it on the landing. Been hanging board for 9 years and somehow never bothered to look up actual weights, I just went off feel. Now I'm curious what other numbers I've been guessing at this whole time, like how much a full lift of mud actually weighs. Anybody else get humbled by a spec sheet they should've read a long time ago?
Man, that 105 number hit me too because I did the same math on a full lift of mud last year and about fell over. A 4.5 gallon bucket of all purpose is roughly 60 pounds, and if you get 36 of those on a pallet that is over a ton sitting on one little spot on the floor, which explains why my back and the customer's tile entryway both gave out on the same day. A cube of 2x4 studs is around 2,000 pounds too, so that whole stack you slide off the truck by hand is basically a small car. We all go off feel for years and then one spec sheet makes you feel like a rookie again.
