Had a mud pan crack mid-finish on a job in Memphis yesterday

I was taping a bedroom ceiling and my plastic mud pan just split right down the middle. Mud went everywhere across the floor and I had to drive 20 minutes to Home Depot for a metal one. Anyone else have plastic pans fail on them or was this just a bad batch?

Plastic pans always made me nervous for that exact reason. Did you notice any cracks forming before it split or did it just go all at once? I switched to metal years ago after a buddy had one fail on a hot day and it made me wonder if temperature was a factor.

Did you try sanding the rough spots before switching?
