I think the move to lightweight joint compound is a step back, not forward.

I used the heavy stuff on a whole house job in Phoenix last month and the finish was way smoother after sanding. The lightweight stuff just doesn't fill deep seams as well for me. Anyone else stick with the old school mud?

Maybe the lightweight stuff just needs a different touch, idk.

Read an article last week that kind of backs up what @lisas78 is saying... it was talking about how the really light materials can be super sensitive to how they're handled. The piece argued it's less about the product being bad and more about needing a totally different method. Like, you can't treat it the same as the standard stuff or it just falls apart. Makes sense if you consider how thin it all is. Heat probably makes that even worse, like Laura said. Just seems like a whole different set of rules.
