I was at the hardware store yesterday and heard a guy telling his buddy to just 'mud over' a soft spot in the wall

Wait, why would you just cover that up? You gotta find out what's making the wall soft first, or it'll just get worse.

Exactly... that's how you get mold.

Hear this kind of thing all the time and it drives me nuts. It's not just walls, it's a whole mindset of covering up the real problem instead of fixing it. Flores.mark is right about the mold, but it's bigger than that. You see it with cars, relationships, even at work, where a quick fix just lets the rot set in deeper. People hate the short term pain of dealing with the actual cause, so they slap some mud on it and hope it holds.

Oh man, @grantnelson hit the nail on the head... it's scary how people just want to hide things instead of fixing them. I've seen it so much with houses where someone will cover up a leaky pipe with drywall and then wonder why the whole ceiling caves in later. It's like they think if they can't see the problem, it doesn't exist. But that's how you turn a small fix into a major disaster down the road, and then you're paying triple what it would've cost to do it right the first time.
