That attitude is a straight path to a cracked ceiling. Abby_brown is right about the skill part. My neighbor tried to skim coat his whole living room after watching one video. The walls ended up looking like a topo map. He had to pay a pro triple to fix it. Some jobs just aren't for beginners.

Abby_brown hit on something with the first coat looking bad, but honestly the real test is the sanding. You can do a decent coat and still ruin it with one wrong sanding pass.
