My brand new drywall lift hinge snapped on the third job in Denver
I picked up a new lift from Home Depot for $280 last month, thinking it would save me time on ceilings. The hinge where the crossbar folds just gave out completely while I was holding a 12 foot sheet up. Had to rig a 2x4 under it to finish the room, and now I'm wondering if I should just weld it myself or send it back. Anyone else had bad luck with the cheaper aluminum lifts holding up?

Return it, welding a $280 lift over a busted hinge seems like overkill for a simple exchange.

A bit of welding on a cheap hinge is a pretty straightforward fix, not exactly overkill if you have a friend with a welder or know what you're doing. Returning it is the obvious choice if you want no hassle, but a quick weld can save you a trip to the store.

Those cheap aluminum lifts from the big box stores are notorious for the hinge welds letting go. Better off just returning it and spending a bit more on one from a proper drywall supplier.
