One bad morning on a 12-foot ceiling job in Tampa
Had a Tuesday where the studs were 3/4 inch out of plumb on every wall, so I spent 4 hours shimming and ripping strips just to hang the first board. Then my taping crew showed up late and the homeowner started humming the Jeopardy theme while watching us work. Anyone else get jobs where the framing is so bad you wonder if the builder even owned a level?

That Jeopardy theme comment got me. I read somewhere that most builders don't even bother checking for plumb until the homeowner complains. I think it's because they run crews so fast that nobody has time to stop and pull a level out. The worst part is when the shims start stacking up and you realize you're basically building a whole new wall just to make it straight. It's not your fault, but you're the one eating the hours trying to fix someone else's sloppy work. The homeowner humming just makes it feel like they're timing you to see if they get a bargain on the labor. I've had framers tell me they use a string line and a prayer, and honestly I believe them.
