Saw a stat that hangers in the 70s hung way more board per day than we do now
I was reading an old issue of Walls & Ceilings from 1974 and it said a good hanger back then was putting up around 1,200 square feet of board in an 8 hour day. That number kind of blew my mind because on a normal house I feel good getting 700 or 800. I know they had lighter board and way fewer screw patterns to worry about, but still. Anybody here worked with guys who came up in that era and can say if those numbers were real or just magazine talk?
My buddy's uncle hung board in the 80s and he said those old numbers were real but only on wide open stuff like warehouses and strip malls with no cuts. He told me the trick was they'd have a whole crew loading and stacking right at your feet so you never stopped to grab sheets, plus the board was way lighter and you could just nail it. On a house with closets and stairs and a hundred outlets you're never sniffing 1,200 and nobody back then was either.
