Serious question, did anyone else think the dust sponge thing was a gimmick until they tried it
I have been hanging board since 2008 and I have hauled around a shop vac with a drywall bag for most of it. A guy on my crew kept telling me to try one of those big damp sponges for sanding dust instead of vacuuming the whole room, and I laughed at him for weeks. Finally tried it last month on a small patch job in a hallway here in Grand Rapids and I could not believe how much it grabbed. You wipe the walls and floor down with it damp, the dust sticks to it, then you rinse it out in a bucket. Whole room took me about 15 minutes instead of the usual 40 with the vac, and no fine dust floating in the air. I still use the vac on big gut jobs but for small stuff the sponge is now in my bucket. Does anyone else do it this way, or am I late to the party on something everybody already knew?

The "laughed at him for weeks" part is exactly how I was too. My old foreman swore by the wet sponge and I figured it was just some old timer trick that did not really work. Tried it on a small bathroom redo and it grabbed way more than I expected, and the best part is nothing gets kicked back up into the air like it does when you sweep or even vac sometimes. On little jobs it is faster and easier, no bag to swap and no cord to drag around. I keep a couple sponges in the truck now and only break out the vac when the mess is really big.
