Switched to using a drywall square for mudding inside corners

I got tired of fighting with my trowel to get clean 90 degree corners, so last week I tried using my drywall square as a guide. It worked better than I expected, anyone else use tools differently than they were made for?

So did you use the square as a straightedge to run your knife along, or did you actually clamp it in the corner as a physical guide for your trowel? I'm asking because I tried the first way years ago on a job where the corners were way off and I needed something to make them look less terrible. It worked okay but I had to be real careful not to gouge the paper tape with the edge of the square. The second way sounds like a pain because you'd have to hold it steady with one hand while mudding with the other, which is asking for a mess. What's your trick for keeping it from sliding around on you?

I remember watching a video where a guy used a drywall square with a couple of those little adhesive sandpaper pads stuck to the back to keep it from sliding, and @dylan_ward that honestly sounded like a way better system than trying to clamp it or hold it steady with your off-hand. I mean, I haven't tried it myself but it made sense, just stick it in the corner and let the friction do the work.
