Talked to a painter at the job on 4th Street about skim coats

He told me he'd rather wait an extra day for a perfect skim than rush a second coat of paint to hide my mistakes. Said it saves him 3 hours of work on a normal room. That hit different because I always thought faster was better for the next crew. How do you guys balance speed with giving the next trade a clean slate?

Oh for sure, that three hours isn't just painting. I mean, he's counting all the sanding and cleaning up dust after, maybe even fixing little spots he missed. Rushing the prep just makes every step after it harder and slower. It's like a domino effect of extra work.

Yeah exactly, that domino effect is the worst part. You rush the skim coat thinking you're saving time, then you're stuck with drips and ridges that need sanding for way longer than planned. Plus all that dust gets everywhere and you gotta wipe everything down again. I've done it too and ended up spending more time fixing mistakes than if I'd just done it right the first time. Makes you feel kinda dumb standing there with sandpaper wondering why you didn't just slow down.

Three hours on a single room is wild. That's basically a whole morning of extra work just from rushing the skim coat.
