That cheap corner trowel I bought off Facebook Marketplace
Picked up a used $5 corner trowel from a guy selling his dad's old tools near me. First two jobs it worked fine, then on a third one the handle just snapped clean off mid-swipe. Anybody else have luck with used tools or is it better to just buy new?

Read something on a DIY site about old tools being hit or miss. Handles on cheap trowels are glued together, not welded or riveted. The guy's dad probably used it for years, so the glue was already old and brittle. That $5 savings turned into a mess on a job. I'd just buy a new one from a hardware store for $12. Saves the headache.

Feel for you @xena_hernandez98, that's a rough way to learn a lesson. I've had similar stuff happen with old tools where you think you're saving a buck but end up paying for it in time and frustration. The glue thing is a real trap, especially on trowels where the handle takes all that torque. Hope the rest of the job went smoother after you swapped it out.

John from the shop told me those old ones are actually better because the glue was stronger back then before they went to cheaper formulas. Sounds like that handle was just at the end of its life, not a sign of all old tools being junk.
