That job in the old theater basement last month was a special kind of bad.

We were hanging board in a space with a seven foot ceiling, so we were bent over all day. The owner had run new plumbing but didn't tell us, so we hit a live water line with a screw. It took two hours to get the water shut off and we had to pull down a dozen soggy sheets. What's your worst story about a hidden surprise in a wall or ceiling?

Two hours to shut the water off? How is that even possible? That's a whole new level of bad planning by the owner. I'd have lost my mind.

Honestly, what if it wasn't the owner's fault at all? The main shutoff valve could be completely seized or buried under something. I've seen it where you need a special tool or even the city to step in. That turns a simple five minute job into a huge ordeal. The planning might have been fine, but they just hit a physical problem nobody could see coming. Makes you wonder what kind of mess they actually found.

Yeah, @zarat37 has a point. I've seen those old valves just crumble when you try to turn them, like a rusty cookie. Then you're stuck waiting for the city guy who shows up three hours later with a giant wrench. What should be a quick fix turns into a whole day of watching water drip.
