Tried using a paint roller to texture knockdown and it looked like a crime scene

I was out of my usual hopper gun on a small bedroom job in Austin, so I figured I'd just roll on the mud and knock it down. It left these huge globs that looked like someone threw a bucket of oatmeal at the wall, took me an hour with a wet sponge to fix it. Has anyone else tried something dumb like this and instantly regretted it?

looked like a crime scene" is killing me... what kind of mud were you using? Like was it thinned out at all or just straight out of the bucket?

Read some drywall guys talking about this. They said thick mud straight from the bucket turns into a bloodbath fast. Real thick stuff grabs the knife and flings everywhere. You gotta thin it just a little with water, like pancake batter consistency. Makes a world of difference.
