Vent: My uncle's 'test the mud with your tongue' advice
My uncle swore by tasting joint compound to check consistency. Said if it sizzled on your tongue, it was too wet. Tried it on a job in Phoenix last month. Spent 10 minutes spitting out drywall dust and drinking water. Mud was fine, my pride wasn't. Customer walked in mid-spit, asked if I was okay. Told them it was a new hydration technique. Has anyone else gotten weird inherited trade tricks that just flat out don't work?
My grandpa used to say you could tell if concrete was ready by spitting on it and watching how fast it dried. Tried that on a driveway pour in Tucson back in 2019 and all I got was a bunch of weird looks from the homeowner and a dry mouth. These old tricks probably worked when the materials were different but half of them are just nonsense now.
