Vent: Old foreman told me to stop back-rolling my mud and I thought he was crazy

Turns out he was right after three straight jobs where my finish started peeling, so now I just lay it on smooth and let it set, anyone else run into this problem with heavy coats?

Right? It's like your own hands are lying to you. @angelamurphy probably felt the same way, I swear half the battle is just convincing yourself to stop messing with it. I had to literally tape my trowel to the workbench one time so I wouldn't pick it back up and start rolling that last coat again.

Drove me crazy too when I first learned that. Took a few messed up jobs before I finally listened to the old timer who told me the same thing. Felt like I was wasting time just standing there watching it set, but the finish holds way better now. Had to unlearn a bad habit I picked up from watching some YouTube guys who don't know what they're talking about.

My old man taught me the same trick and it finally clicked when I started rushing cabinets that still had wet spots underneath the next morning. Now I set a timer on my phone and force myself to walk away for that extra hour or whatever it needs. That little bit of patience saved me way more time in the long run stripping and redoing finish.
