Rant: found a $2 trick that saved me an hour fishing wire through a 12 foot wall cavity
Spent 20 minutes last Tuesday poking a fish tape through a fire block in a Oak Park remodel before I remembered the chain trick. Dropped a small nut tied to kite string down from the attic, fished it out at the box, and pulled the romex right through in one shot. Wish a journeyman had shown me this on my first year, anyone got other cheap hacks for old plaster walls?
That chain trick is a LIFE saver. Had a similar moment last month when I was trying to run a new outlet in my own house, 1905 four square with the old knob and tube still hiding in the walls. Kept hitting a horizontal brace about halfway down so I grabbed one of those cheap magnetic pickup tools from Harbor Freight, stuck it on a string, and used the magnet to drag my wire past the block. Took two minutes after fighting it for an hour. Old houses will humble you real quick.
