A retired tech in Tucson told me to stop recapping power boards, and now I am second guessing my bench setup
I was picking up a parts lot from a retired tech named Walt in Tucson, and he watched me carry out three recap jobs I had just finished for a local shop. He said, "you are just resetting the clock on a cap that already cooked its neighbors," and that hit me hard since I have been doing recaps as my go-to fix for 4 years. He walked me through how he checks for heat stress on the board first and only replaces what actually failed testing, not the whole row. Now I am looking at my parts drawer and wondering how many jobs I overdid it on. Does anyone here actually test caps before swapping them, or is that just a luxury when you have a decent ESR meter?
