Had a smart thermostat nuke my whole HVAC board last week

It was a Nest thermostat on a house in Savannah. Homeowner said it started acting funny after a power surge. I opened up the air handler and that cheap little board was completely fried, black marks and all. The thermostat itself was fine but it sent some whack voltage back through the low voltage wires. That repair cost them $450 for a new control board plus my labor. Anyone else seen smart stats wreck more than they save?

That cheap little board was completely fried" is exactly what happened to me last year... I used to swear by smart stats but one power surge turned me into a believer that they cause more problems than they fix.

Why does everything good break the second we trust it?
