I swear older soldering stations hold temp way better than new ones
I've been fixing old radios for about 15 years now, and I finally swapped my Weller WES51 for a newer digital station last month. After three weeks of chasing cold joints, I put the old Weller back on the bench. That 20 year old station just holds its temp steady no matter what, the new one bounced around like crazy. Has anyone else gone back to an older tool and seen a huge difference in consistency?

Read that older stations had heavier transformers that handle load better.

Jumping off what @carr.luna said, I wonder if those heavier transformers actually aged better just because they had more copper and iron to soak up heat spikes. Like, modern stuff is smaller and more efficient on paper, but it seems like every little surge or brownout fries them faster. Maybe the old ones were overbuilt for a reason, like they could handle a bad storm without even blinking. I'd be curious to see if anyone's compared failure rates between old and new models over a long period, like 30 years or more.

Old ones were overbuilt" sure, but overbuilt means they were wasting materials. Modern transformers are designed with actual real-world data, not guesswork. The failure rates you're wondering about? They're better now because we understand load patterns and heat dissipation way more than we did 50 years ago.
Those old transformers just ran hotter constantly because they had massive iron cores that held magnetic energy forever. Newer ones switch off faster, shed heat quicker. Brownouts frying modern stuff is mostly bad regulation on the utility side, not the transformer's fault.
Plus, those "heavier" old units were full of PCB oil that's literally banned now because it's toxic. Give me a modern dry-type unit any day over something that'll leak carcinogens if it cracks.
