My logic board repair went sideways after I forgot to ground myself
Was trying to fix a 2015 MacBook Pro that wouldn't charge. Had the board out, was using a multimeter to check some traces on the back side. Then I sneezed and my hand brushed against a chip. Heard a tiny pop and saw a spark. Now the whole thing is dead, won't even power on. Anyone ever dealt with static damage like this? Is there any way to fix a fried controller chip or am I looking at a whole new logic board?

You're not dealing with a static discharge issue, that was a direct short. Static electricity would zorch a chip without you hearing a pop or seeing a spark. What you probably did was touch a live capacitor or a power rail with your hand, which sent voltage straight through the chip. Check for any visible scorch marks near where you brushed it, and if the chip has a visible crack or bubble on top, it's dead. You can try replacing that specific controller chip if you have hot air rework gear, but for most people it's cheaper to just swap the whole board.

That bit about a "direct short" vs static discharge really got me thinking, I didn't even know you could feel a pop from a bad connection like that. I always figured static was the only thing that could kill a chip without you seeing it happen, but you're saying you can actually hear it? That changes how I look at working on my own stuff now, I've brushed against plenty of boards without thinking twice. The idea that my hand could jump a live capacitor and fry a chip just by touching it is kind of scary honestly. Have you ever accidentally done that yourself and heard the pop, or is this more from what you've seen fixing other people's broken gear?

Yeah, that part about hearing a pop is definitely real @ray562, I've done it myself on an old GPU once. Brushed a screwdriver across a capacitor and heard that little crackle, and the card never worked right again. It's honestly a humbling thing when you realize how easy it is to let the magic smoke out just by being careless.
