That customer who argued my $40 repair quote was a ripoff
Had a guy come into my shop last Tuesday with a 10 year old microwave that wouldn't heat. I told him it'd be $40 to check the magnetron and maybe swap a fuse. He said I was trying to scam him and that he could buy a new one for $60. I just pointed at the door and told him to go buy one then. Some people think our time and skill is worth nothing because parts are cheap online.

Bet I'd probably need to pay someone $40 just to find my toolbox.

Used to think I was fine alone. These posts are convincing me otherwise.

Did your friend @ray613 ever get burned by a similar situation? My buddy Tom took his old lawnmower to a guy who quoted him $30 to fix it, and Tom almost walked out saying the same thing about buying a new one for $50. But he let the guy take a look, and it ended up being just a dirty carburetor that took like 20 minutes to clean. Now Tom says that $30 was the best money he ever spent because that mower runs better than any new one he could have grabbed from the store.
