Tried ultrasonic cleaning on a corroded board, did not expect this result
Had an old receiver come in with that nasty green crust all over the power supply section. Usually I just hit it with a brush and some IPA, but this one was bad, so I finally busted out the ultrasonic tank I got for cheap at a yard sale last spring. Ran it with some electronics cleaner mix for about 15 minutes, then dried it with a heat gun at low setting. Board looked way cleaner than anything Ive ever gotten with a brush, but then I fired it up and it shorted out in a spot that looked totally fine before. Turns out the vibration shook loose some crust that had been holding a trace together, so it looked fine but was actually broken underneath. Learned my lesson the hard way, now I always take a hi-res photo of the board before I put it in the tank so I can compare and spot anything that shifts. Has anyone else had ultrasonic cleaning mess up a board that seemed okay at first glance?
