Appreciation post: my old lead in Tucson busted me greasing the wrong sheave for a solid 8 months
I used to think more grease meant a happy machine, so I was hitting every sheave on my route like it owed me money. My lead watched me do it in a machine room on Speedway back in 2019 and asked me why I was loading the deflector flanges like a dummy. He said "grease goes where the book says, not where it feels good," and we pulled the covers and saw the buildup was actually trapping grit in the rope grooves. Turns out I was making the wear worse on at least a dozen cars because I copied what the guy before me did without reading the manual. Now I clean and check spec before I touch a grease gun, and my rope wear numbers finally leveled off. What is the one habit you picked up from someone who trained you that turned out to be flat wrong?
