Finally got that stuck governor in the old bank building to release after three days of trying.

We were about to call for a full replacement, but a bit of heat and a gentle tap with the brass hammer did the trick. Has anyone else had luck with that method on a really old Otis unit?

Wait, you used heat on an old Otis governor? That sounds risky.

Oh man, heat and a brass hammer is pretty much the old school elevator tech's secret handshake! @blake_owens knows what's up with that oil trick too, same principle just different tools. I've had to do that on a few Otis governors from the 60s where the safety pawl was totally frozen. Combined a little heat from a heat gun with some PB Blaster, let it soak for an hour, then a few taps and it broke loose. Way better than risking cracking the housing with a steel hammer. Just gotta be real careful not to get the casting too hot or you'll mess with the heat treat on the internal springs.

Reminds me of the time we freed a seized pulley with some penetrating oil.
