Had a guy in a Chicago high rise tell me his 'fix' for a sticking door

He said he sprayed the guide rails with WD-40 because it 'worked on his garage door'. I had to explain how that attracts dirt and gums up the whole works, leading to a bigger call. Anyone else run into 'helpful' building staff making things worse?

Tell them to wipe off all that WD-40 with a rag and some degreaser. Then have them rub a plain old bar of soap along the track. The soap lubricates just enough without attracting every bit of dust and making a huge, sticky mess.

Reminds me of the time I tried to fix a squeaky hinge with cooking spray. Let's just say my kitchen smelled like fried chicken for a week and the problem came back twice as bad. Some lessons you only learn the messy way.

Oh man, does this remind me of my buddy's place? His super decided the garbage disposal sounded rough, so he filled it with dish soap and ran it. The foam flood was unreal, like a bubble monster took over his kitchen. Some folks just have too much confidence with a can of something.

Honestly, WD-40 is a solid quick fix. That garage door logic totally tracks, and it buys you months before any real gunk builds up. Sometimes you just need a cheap, fast solution that gets the door closing today, not the perfect textbook repair.
