Had to choose between a ladder and a milk crate in a tight shaft, guess which one won

This morning I had to re-level a door track in a cramped elevator pit in downtown Denver, and my ladder wouldn't fit sideways. My helper offered a milk crate he found in the trash room, and honestly I picked the crate because it was faster. Worked fine for about ten minutes, then the plastic split right under my boot and I landed on a pile of old wire. I'm fine, just bruised my wrist, but now I'm wondering what other guys use for tight spots like that. Anyone got a go-to makeshift stand that doesn't collapse?
