I finally quit using a pipe wrench as my main hand tool and my knuckles have never been happier
I know a bunch of you swear by a good pipe wrench for everything on the car top, and I get it, that's what the old timer in Cleveland taught me back in 2011 too. For years I used a 14 inch pipe wrench on rope shackles and guide shoe bolts, and I told myself it was fine. Then about 8 months ago I was doing a rope swap on a 6 stop unit and the jaws slipped on a shackle nut, and my hand went into the sheave guard. Two stitches, and the guy I work with just looked at me and said the wrench was too wide for the job. So I switched to a proper socket set and a ratcheting box end, and I use a spud wrench only for the big stuff now. The bolt heads stay clean, I'm not chewing up hardware someone has to back out later, and I'm not fighting a tool that wants to walk off the nut. I was wrong about this for a long time, and I don't miss the pipe wrench on the car top one bit. What hand tools did you ditch later than you should have?
