I'll take an old Otis over a modern MRL any day
Just had to pick between a full mod job on a 20 year old Otis or putting in a brand new MRL system for a 6 floor office building downtown. Everyone I talked to kept pushing the MRL because it's cheaper and quieter. But I went with the full control overhaul on the old Otis because the cab and rails were still solid. Two months in and the thing runs smoother than any new MRL I've worked on. Who else has had better luck keeping old iron running instead of swapping in the new stuff?

That 15k story about the Dover rebuild from @the_john is EXACTLY what scares me about some of these old projects. My Otis had a couple of those moments too, like when the door operator started acting up three weeks after I finished the control work and I thought I was in for it. But I had an old timer tell me once that those 90s Otis machines are like classic cars, they take patience but the ride quality is unmatched when you get the tuning dialed in.

I mean... is it really that deep? You did a full mod job on a 20 year old Otis and it runs smoother than brand new MRLs. Okay, cool, but that's a lot of work and money for something that's still gonna need more attention down the road.

Had a buddy drop like 15k on an old Dover rebuild, ran perfect for about a year then the controller board fried. Ngl, sometimes you're just throwing good money after bad with those old beasts.
