Ran my sheave grooves dry for 11 years, then a guy in Tulsa handed me a tube of grease and I saw the light
I used to think greasing sheave grooves was a scam pushed by supply salesmen. For 11 years I never touched them on any of my route cars, just wiped them down with a rag and called it good. Then about 8 months ago I picked up a route in Tulsa and the guy I took over from had been greasing his sheaves every 90 days like clockwork. I pulled the ropes on one of his cars for a re-level and the wear pattern was night and day compared to mine. His grooves still had that shiny even contact across the whole surface, mine were cupped out and shiny only in the middle from rope riding the same worn spot. I measured both with a groove gauge and his were maybe 15 thousandths under spec after 9 years, mine were shot at 6. Rope life on his cars was running 7 plus years, I was swapping ropes every 3 to 4. I felt like an idiot. Now I grease every car every quarter and I swear the ride quality even smoothed out. Anybody else get converted on something they swore was a waste of time?
