That 2am door lock fault that took 6 hours to crack
Went back to a hotel in Nashville last week for a door lock that kept dropping offline. Checked the controller, the wiring, even swapped the lock head. Still dead. Finally at 2am I pulled the door closer and found the arm was pinching the communication cable, shorting it every time the door closed. Six hours for a half inch of slack. Has anyone else had a door hardware problem that turned out to be something that dumb?

The door closer arm is the last thing anyone looks at because it's mechanical, not electrical, so our brains skip right past it when we're chasing a network fault. But that pinch point gets worse over time as the arm sags and the cable jacket wears thin, so the same short keeps coming back even after you fix it. Next time you're on one of these, grab the arm and cycle the door by hand before you touch the controller.
