That one elevator in the old courthouse went from growling to silent in 2 weeks
There is this 1958 Montgomery unit in the county courthouse downtown and for 6 months it sounded like a bear was trapped in the hoistway every time it moved. I finally got sent out to look at it and found the guide shoes were so dry they were basically grinding metal on metal, plus someone had greased the rails with the wrong stuff years back and it turned into glue. I swapped the shoes, cleaned the rails with kerosene, put on the right lube, and within 2 weeks of running it daily that thing went whisper quiet. The night janitor actually asked me if we replaced the whole car. Have any of you run into rails that were greased when they should have been left dry, and how did you clean them without tearing everything apart?
