Had a chat with an old buddy who does photography... made me rethink how I handle late payers

I ran into a guy I used to work with at a flooring warehouse, he does wedding photography now. He told me he just sends a friendly text on day 31 with a photo of the invoice attached, no angry email or threatening calls. Said it keeps the relationship smooth and he gets paid within 48 hours most of the time. I tried it on a job I finished two weeks ago and the guy Venmo'd me within an hour. Has anyone else tried a casual text approach instead of formal emails?

Man, isn't it funny how we overthink this stuff? We get all formal with payment reminders like we're sending a court summons, but a simple text works way better. That's probably because nobody likes feeling threatened or put on the spot, a text just feels more human and less aggressive. Most people want to pay you, they just forget or put it off, so a casual nudge is all it takes. It's like the difference between tapping someone on the shoulder and yelling at them from across the room, you know?

Oh man hard disagree here lol. Formal payment reminders actually work way better for me because they create a paper trail. A text is too easy to ignore or forget about, especially if someone is busy and just lets the notification disappear. Plus some clients absolutely do need that little bit of pressure to pay on time, a casual nudge lets them keep putting it off. The whole tapping on the shoulder vibe only works if the person actually respects your time in the first place.

Yeah the "tapping on the shoulder" thing is spot on. It's like formal emails put up this wall between you and the client, but a text just feels like you're reminding a friend. Plus I bet it makes them way less likely to get defensive or dig their heels in, you know?
